Rain lashed against the windows, mirroring the tempest brewing inside Mark. He'd just gotten the news – Mrs. Gable's, the diner he'd frequented since childhood, was shutting down. A coldness spread from his chest, chilling him to the bone.

He slammed his fist on the table, rattling the coffee cups. The sudden movement sent a tremor through him. Damn it all! He’d been planning on that pecan pie for weeks.

His shoulders slumped as he reread the terse statement. He wanted to scream. Instead, he just stared at the page, the world seemed to dull and blur, as if viewed through a sheet of frosted glass.
