Liam slammed the screen door a little too hard, the sound echoing in the otherwise silent house. The card, pale blue and featuring a whimsical drawing of balloons, seemed to mock him. His birthday was next month, which was months away.

He ripped open the envelope, half expecting a prank. Nothing. The inside read, in a neat, unfamiliar script: *“Wishing you a day filled with joy!”* He huffed, a short, sharp breath that rattled his lungs. He was already running late for his dentist appointment.

He threw the card on the table, where it landed face down on top of his keys. He just needed to find his keys. He rubbed his face with both hands. This was all just another thing to deal with.
