He ran a hand through his hair, already feeling the familiar pull of tension in his neck. This was a complete waste of a Saturday. Sarah knew, with absolute certainty, she should be at the beach, not here, sorting through the detritus of a life she barely knew. The air inside the house felt thick, heavy with the scent of mothballs and decay.

A box of old photographs clattered to the floor as she clumsily reached for it. She swore under her breath, the curse word echoing in the empty hallway. Why did everything have to be so fragile?
