The vibrant, overly enthusiastic lettering on the invitation made Claire's eye twitch. She was halfway through a mountain of bills and now this. She tossed the paper onto the already chaotic pile of mail with a grunt.

She reached for a glass of water, then slammed it down on the table, the abrupt noise jarring the silent room. She ran a hand through her hair, tugging at the strands in a gesture of annoyance.

She considered cancelling all her appointments, staying in bed, and feigning a sudden illness. The thought of confronting the ghosts of her past, of being judged and measured against those people, was unbearable.
