The news felt like a physical blow. The world seemed to wobble. He struggled to breathe. He wanted to understand, to make it make sense, but the pieces wouldn’t fit. The whole thing was ludicrous. He grabbed the remote and turned up the television to drown out the confusion, but nothing helped.

He felt a sudden, inexplicable urge to clean. He scrubbed the kitchen counter until his knuckles were raw, the relentless motion a futile attempt to impose order on the chaos. His movements were jerky and frantic.
