He slumped onto the cracked leather of the bus seat, the weight of the rejection letter feeling heavier than any physical burden. The air conditioning wheezed, doing little to combat the oppressive heat. David stared out the window at the blurred cityscape, his gaze unfocused. He’d envisioned the self-cleaning dog collar as his ticket out of his dead-end job, a chance to finally pursue his passions. Now, the dream felt tarnished, tainted. He pictured the sleek, expensive prototype he’d painstakingly crafted, now useless. He closed his eyes, a muscle in his cheek twitching. He wanted to scream.
