"Seriously?" Carol whispered to herself, the screen illuminating her face with an unflattering glow. Her breath hitched in her throat. Her daughter, Jessica, had been on edge lately. Closed doors, long phone calls, the sudden obsession with privacy. Now it all made sense.

Carol sank onto the edge of the bed, the mattress giving way under her weight. A wave of frustration washed over her, a hot, prickly sensation that made her want to scream. She picked up a nearby pillow and threw it against the wall. It hit with a dull thud.
