The air in the office was thick with a palpable tension. Kevin could feel it, a physical weight pressing down on his chest. He tapped his foot, the sound a staccato rhythm against the hushed silence. He’d been expecting this. The rumors had been circulating for weeks.

He ran a hand over his face, trying to clear his head. He had bills to pay, a mortgage, and a string of broken promises he was tired of hearing. He stared at his computer screen, the words blurred before his eyes. He felt a throbbing ache behind his eyes.

He stood up, grabbing his coat. He needed to get away, to clear his head, to somehow prepare himself for the inevitable. The meeting was in two hours. Two hours to contemplate the potential unraveling of his life.
