Mark slumped in his chair, the office door slamming shut behind him with a resounding thud. Dr. Lee, his advisor, was packing up to leave. He ran a hand through his already messy hair, letting out a heavy sigh. Years of work, all potentially wasted.

He glared at the cluttered desk, a battlefield of half-written drafts and discarded research papers. A sudden headache bloomed behind his eyes. He'd confided in Dr. Lee. He felt betrayed.

Mark reached for his phone, a futile gesture. There was no one he could call. No one who understood the crushing weight of this disappointment. He leaned back, his shoulders slumping. He felt utterly and completely defeated.
