The afternoon sun, streaming through the blinds, seemed to mock her. The brightness did nothing to lighten Elena’s mood. She watched as David, yet again, received a compliment. Elena felt the familiar ache in her jaw. She had done all the preliminary research for the project, the groundwork. Now, David was reaping the rewards.

She could barely breathe. The air in the room felt heavy, and it was hard to concentrate. The sound of David's voice grated on her ears.

She stood up abruptly, knocking over her chair. It clattered against the floor. She did not bother to pick it up. Elena was leaving.
