He slammed the door, not an angry slam, more of a defeated one. "Out," he finally managed to say, his voice strained. He turned, the words of explanation from Jamie still ringing in his ears. He kicked a loose pebble across the living room, watching it skitter into a dark corner.

The house felt larger, colder, already echoing with a silence that hadn’t even happened yet. He ran a hand through his hair, the familiar gesture failing to bring any comfort. How could Jamie just…go?

He sank onto the sofa, the cushions doing little to cushion his sudden weariness. He wanted to sleep for a week. The world seemed to be closing in.
