The back of his neck prickled. Thomas closed his eyes and inhaled slowly, trying to find a semblance of composure. The huge sycamore, owned by the perpetually oblivious Mr. Davies, was now sprawled across his meticulously maintained koi pond.

The water, previously a tranquil mirror, was now a muddy brown mess. He could almost hear the carp thrashing in a panic. He ran his hand through his already disheveled hair, feeling the sting of the sudden loss of peace.

He opened his eyes, the world seemed slightly out of focus. He imagined the insurance claim process. It loomed, a monstrous beast ready to devour his time and his patience.
