The humid air of the attic clung to Amelia like a shroud. She swiped a bead of sweat from her brow, smearing dust across her forehead. This whole thing was ridiculous. Her brother, Leo, had gotten the sprawling vineyard in Tuscany. And she, Amelia, got…this. She kicked a mildewed trunk, the wood groaning in protest.

“Seriously?” she muttered, pulling open a tarnished silver locket. Inside, a faded portrait stared back at her: a woman with a severe bun and a disapproving gaze. The inscription on the back read, "For my dearest Agnes, may you never know the folly of love." Amelia slammed the locket shut. It felt like a personal insult.

A glint of something caught her eye. Beneath a pile of moth-eaten shawls lay a small, velvet box. She snatched it up and opened it. A single, perfect pearl nestled within. She practically threw it back down in disgust, the silence of the attic seeming to mock her.
