“Well, this is just great.” John’s voice was laced with a dryness that belied the simmering rage he felt. His sister, Emily, was getting the family's vast fortune, complete with investments and properties. And he? He got a beat-up old guitar.

He ran his fingers over the worn wood, the strings rusty and loose. He slammed the instrument case shut. He imagined his sister, lounging in her penthouse overlooking the city. He could feel his heart pounding in his chest.

“Unbelievable.” He threw the guitar onto the floor. The sound of the wood cracking gave him a momentary sense of satisfaction, a small release. He crossed his arms, staring at the ceiling. He felt as though he might explode.
