The email sat in Amelia’s inbox, a blinking red notification. Another one. She’d been up all night, fueled by lukewarm coffee and the crushing weight of her thesis. Now this. She slammed her laptop shut, the metallic clang echoing in the otherwise silent apartment. Her jaw clenched. Years, she’d poured years into this degree. Where was she supposed to go now? The thought burned a hole in her stomach.

She grabbed the worn textbook and flung it across the room. It hit the wall with a hollow thud. Taking a deep breath, Amelia picked up her phone, quickly composing a text message to her advisor. He was probably just as blindsided, too. She hoped he would understand.
