The doctor’s pronouncements had left Mark feeling hollow. The diagnosis, the treatment plan - it all seemed so abstract, so distant from the reality of his daily struggle. He felt as if he was sinking in quicksand. He had a lot of questions.

He left the office. He saw a man leaning against the wall, head in hands. He recognized him from the waiting room.

The man looked up, his face a mask of disappointment. He nodded. Mark felt his own shoulders sag, the weight of it all pressing down on him. They both knew where to go. They were sharing a burden.
