The aroma of burnt coffee hung heavy in the air. Maya glared at the half-read manuscript on the kitchen table. Its pages were littered with thinly veiled accounts of her quirky habits. The way she chewed the end of her pen, the way she hummed off-key while doing the dishes – every embarrassing detail laid bare.

She slammed the coffee mug down, the ceramic clinking against the table. She felt a burning sensation in her chest, a mixture of disbelief and utter bewilderment.

"Mark!" she yelled, her voice sharper than she intended. "Get in here, now!" Her patience had completely worn away.
