Liam drummed his fingers on his knee, the rhythmic thumping a frantic counterpoint to the thrumming energy within him. He kept checking his watch, then back to the closed door of the coach's office. The tryouts for the swim team had been brutal, pushing everyone to their absolute limits. He felt a surge of energy at the mere thought of making the team. He was finally going to be on the team! This was his chance to break free from the shadows of his older brother, a swimming superstar.

A bead of sweat trickled down his temple, despite the cool air conditioning. The door opened and the coach emerged, his face unreadable. Liam shot to his feet, a goofy grin plastered on his face. He felt like he could float across the room.

The list was posted, a stark white rectangle. He searched frantically, his breath catching in his throat. His name wasn't there. A wave of cold crashed over him.
