The crisp autumn air nipped at Maya's cheeks as she walked towards the tennis courts. A giddy feeling bubbled inside her, threatening to spill over. Her serve had been on fire during the tryouts. She pictured herself, head held high, representing the school at the state championships. The world had never seemed so vibrant and full of possibility. She felt a lightness in her step.

She reached the notice board and her shoulders slumped. Her name was not among those selected. The brightness drained from her world, leaving behind a dull ache. She felt a deep disappointment.
