"Almost time!" Mark muttered under his breath, adjusting his tie in the reflection of the bus window. He ran a hand through his hair, smoothing it down for what felt like the hundredth time. His stomach did a little flip. He had been looking forward to this surprise party more than anything.

He practically leaped off the bus, already picturing the look on everyone's faces when he walked in. Anticipation thrummed through him, a physical buzz in his fingertips. The venue was a local karaoke bar, and Mark had been practicing his favorite song.

His grin faltered at the sight of the deserted bar, the blinds pulled down. A closed sign hung in the window. A crumpled flyer lay on the ground, the party details crossed out. He blinked, confusion clouding his euphoria.
