He checked his reflection one last time, smoothing down his already-perfected hair. The anticipation was almost unbearable, a delicious tension that tightened his muscles and quickened his pulse. Tonight, they were throwing him a party. A surprise party! He grinned to himself.

He practically flew to the address, his feet barely touching the ground. He had pictured the scene a thousand times: the music, the laughter, the surprised looks on everyone's faces.

The venue was empty. The lights were off. A single envelope sat on the welcome mat. He felt the blood drain from his face.
