The sudden bark jerked Mark from his book. He leaped to his feet, scattering pages across the freshly mowed grass. His smile stretched wide as he saw the golden retriever barreling across the dividing line. He clapped his hands, a loud crack that echoed in the quiet afternoon.

He'd been waiting for this all week. He'd prepped the yard for the occasion, carefully scattering chew toys and filling a bowl with fresh water. The dog, as if sensing the warm welcome, was already wagging its tail furiously.

"Alright, buddy!" he practically yelled, his voice laced with pure joy. He bent down, ready to engage in a game of fetch. Today promised to be a pure slice of bliss.
