The train doors hissed open, and David practically launched himself onto the platform. He scanned the bustling crowd, his chest tight with anticipation. He had a gift for her, a small, silver locket he hoped she would remember.

He found her quickly, her bright red coat a beacon in the sea of commuters. She was laughing, her head tilted back, and the sound of it vibrated through him. He hurried towards her, his breath catching in his throat.

"Chloe?" he managed, his voice a little hoarse. She stopped laughing, her expression shifting from mirth to bewilderment. Her eyes flitted over his face, searching. “I don’t think so,” she answered, a small frown forming on her forehead. The locket felt heavy in his pocket, a sudden lead weight.
