The worn cardboard box sat on the floor, its contents a legacy waiting to be unlocked. David had been tasked with sorting through his great-aunt’s things, a task he'd approached with dutiful lethargy. Now, though, the weariness had vanished. He was grinning like a fool.

He’d found a series of postcards, each one a vibrant splash of color. They featured exotic locales – Paris, Rome, Cairo – all destinations his great-aunt had allegedly never traveled to, supposedly content to stay within the confines of her small town.

Each card was signed with a different name, a different flourish. David ran his fingers over the glossy surfaces, his mind a whirlwind of possibilities. The lies they had been told. The adventures she had. This was a treasure trove of untold stories.
