The silence that descended upon the elevator was quickly broken by a breathless laugh. Maya couldn’t contain herself. She’d always wanted to break through her shell with Brad, the quiet IT guy she'd been admiring from afar. And now, they were locked in an elevator together. This was it!

She adjusted her scarf, smoothing it down even though it was already perfectly in place. Her fingers tapped a staccato rhythm against her thighs. “Well,” she began, her voice a little too high, “this is certainly… unique, right?”

Brad, to his credit, seemed less than enthused. But Maya pressed on, her usual shyness completely forgotten. She launched into a story about a misadventure from her childhood, her words tumbling over each other. The possibilities! This could be a genuine connection.
