The old wooden door of the shed creaked open, revealing sunlight that bathed the space in a golden glow. John had been avoiding this corner for months, ever since the painful split with his friend, Mark. A letter tucked under the loose brick, a letter he was not expecting.

He picked it up, his hands clumsy with anticipation. His heart did a little flip inside his chest. He brushed the dust from the envelope, tracing the familiar handwriting. He had to know what was said, what had been left unsaid.

He sat on the damp ground, squinting in the bright light. He ripped it open and began to read. A smile began to form on his face, growing bigger with each word. He felt like he was floating, weightless, unburdened.
