He had barely finished his request, the words still hanging in the air, when Thomas blurted out, "Absolutely! Wonderful idea, Mr. Davis!" His voice was unusually loud, nearly a shout.

Heat bloomed in his chest, spreading outwards. The thought of that overgrown elm disappearing from view… He paced the porch, his fingers drumming a frantic rhythm against his thighs.

He thought of the new paint job for the house, no longer obscured by shadow. He imagined the way the light would bounce off the freshly cut grass. He was going to spend the next few hours figuring out how to redecorate the living room.

He grabbed a pen and a pad of paper, starting a list. He scribbled ideas as quickly as his hand could manage.
