From the moment he received the acceptance letter, Daniel had been on a high. He’d paced the living room for hours, barely able to sit still. He felt like he could run a marathon. He'd been looking forward to a fresh start, a new city, and new friends. His future sparkled before him, so bright he almost had to squint. He’d even begun packing his bags, imagining the look on his friend's face when they came to help him load the car.

He’d almost forgotten the scholarship application. He figured the news would be good. Why wouldn't it? He had the grades, the recommendations, the whole package! He’d been checking his email obsessively, but that was before he got the acceptance letter. Now, suddenly, he found himself pulling up his email, heart thumping.

His breath hitched as he read the subject line: “Scholarship Decision.” His hands trembled as he opened it. The words blurred before his eyes.
