The locker room smelled of sweat and liniment, but for Leo, it was the scent of triumph. He slapped his teammate’s back, a loud, happy thwack. His shoulders felt loose, relaxed, like a weight had been lifted. He’d busted his tail throughout the entire season, pushing himself, honing his skills. The moment had finally arrived.

He sauntered over to the clipboard where the coach had posted the selections. A swell of confidence rose in his chest as he scanned the names. He found his own near the top. He had made the team. He whooped, a sound of pure glee, and punched the air.

The high-fives and congratulations from his teammates just made him feel more wonderful. It felt as if he was floating just above the floor. He couldn't stop smiling.
