“Whee!” she yelped as she practically flung herself out of the taxi. The driver looked startled, but she didn’t care; she was on a mission! She clutched the colorful balloon bouquet, already envisioning the reaction from her friends. She could barely stand still, her whole body buzzing with a nervous energy that was purely pleasurable.

The building loomed before her, silent and still. Her feet faltered at the front door. A small note taped to the glass read: “Postponed. Text Sam.” Her smile vanished like smoke. She slumped, deflated, against the cold glass. The balloons seemed to weigh her down.
