The afternoon sun blazed through the window, warming Elias's skin. He felt a fizzing energy in his veins, like a potent cocktail. He found Chloe in the garden, meticulously watering her herbs. He was still reeling from something he'd seen on her phone.

"Guten Tag, mein Schatz!" she called out, as he entered. Her eyes sparkled. The shock of it – of her even attempting the German – was almost overwhelming.

He blinked, unable to form words. He just stood there, grinning like an idiot. She giggled, her cheeks turning rosy. "I know it's not perfect," she said, her voice brimming with delight. "But I wanted to surprise you. And learn more about who you are." He took a deep breath, an urge to burst into song washing over him. He raced over and embraced her, feeling the most wonderful, electric feeling.
