He practically skipped to the mailbox, a new spring in his step. The world seemed painted in impossibly bright colors. As he sorted through the mail, a plain white card, tucked between a flyer for discounted pizza and a bill, caught his eye. It was blank. No name, just a simple "Happy Birthday!" written in neat, looping cursive. His heart did a little flip, a sensation like a tiny bird taking flight in his chest. A sudden urge to call his best friend, his mother, his ex-girlfriend - anyone - bubbled inside him.
