His heart thumped against his ribs, a frantic drumbeat of pure happiness. He'd never felt so alive. He was still giddy from the evening before. He envisioned her smile, her laugh. He was meeting her, just as agreed, at the bookstore.

He dashed into the bookstore, eager to get to the meeting spot. There she was. But not alone.

A woman stood beside her, looking equally pleased.

He stopped dead in his tracks. He knew the other woman.

The woman smiled at him, and then looked confused.

“Oh, hi!" the woman said. "This is John. John, this is… well, you'll figure it out."
