"Dude, I can't believe it!" shouted Jake, punching the air as he told his friend. He could barely contain himself. The news was still buzzing through him like an electric current. He pictured himself walking the halls of the university, a place he now had access to! He imagined the lectures, the friendships, the whole college experience. He felt a sudden, inexplicable urge to do a somersault. He was going to make his parents proud.

The celebratory pizza was halfway devoured when a phone call interrupted the feast. A stony-faced woman explained that the funding was being rescinded. The scholarship was awarded in error. Jake felt a sudden, profound weight descend upon him, squashing the joy.
