The fluorescent lights of the office seemed to gleam just a bit brighter today. John caught his reflection in the glass door of his office, his grin wide and unguarded. He couldn’t seem to wipe it off his face. This was it. The culmination of all his hard work.

He practically skipped into the meeting room, the words of the announcement barely registering. The specifics didn't matter. The bottom line did.

A weight lifted from his shoulders, and he felt a lightness he hadn't experienced in years. The future was unwritten, a canvas waiting for him to paint it. He pictured himself lounging on a beach somewhere, a Mai Tai in his hand, a yacht in the distance. And he laughed.
