Gemotions

The notice fluttered onto the doormat, white as a winter dove amidst the mismatched brick. I snatched it up, the paper crackling in my grip. A giggle escaped, bubbling up from my chest. My legs felt like springs, bouncing me toward the kitchen. Time to celebrate! That awful apartment felt like a cage anyway. Freedom!

The kettle whistled, a shrill, happy sound mirroring the buzz inside me. I danced a jig while I waited for the water to boil, humming off-key. Earl Grey, my favorite, a worthy toast to new beginnings.

The tiny, cramped kitchen felt suddenly expansive. I pictured myself on a beach, toes in the sand, the sun warm on my skin. This was it – the universe pushing me towards something better.
