The letter arrived on a Tuesday, completely out of the blue. For years, she had nursed a quiet wound. Now, that hurt seemed to melt away under the warmth of the words. Clara found herself spinning in a circle, a childish giggle escaping her lips.

She raced to the kitchen, throwing open the cabinets, searching for something, anything, to mark the occasion. She found a jar of homemade jam, put it on a plate, and took a bite. It was the best jam she had ever tasted.

She danced around the room, making up moves, laughing. She was free. The past was truly, finally, the past. She started humming, a tune that had been stuck in her head for years, now finally released.
