She knew her hard work had paid off, her goal finally achieved. She felt as though she could conquer the world.

She explored every inch, opening and closing the drawers, running her hands along the smooth surfaces of the kitchen counters. Imagining the possibilities gave her a sense of inner warmth, a feeling of satisfaction.

The realtor's message was brief: "Just letting you know, the previous owner… had some legal troubles, nothing to be concerned about now." Her blood ran cold. The image of the previous owner, a man she'd briefly met, flashed through her mind.
