The plans were approved. The email confirmation sat open on the computer screen, the words a silent threat. David felt a wave of nausea wash over him. He deleted the message without rereading it.

He found himself constantly checking the back garden, the space that had always felt so open and safe. He walked the perimeter, his hands tracing the imaginary line the fence would follow. It was a suffocating pressure that seemed to squeeze his chest.

His gaze flickered to the empty space where his dog, Buster, always ran. He could feel a cold dread creeping into his bones. His knuckles turned white as he gripped the edge of the kitchen table.
