Gemotions

The music seemed to pulse in her ears, each beat a drumbeat of impending doom. She had known he would be here, of course, but that didn’t make it easier. Her carefully constructed facade of casual indifference threatened to crack.

He was across the room, talking to their mutual friends. She could feel every eye on her, even when she knew it wasn’t. Her hands were ice cold. She fiddled with the strap of her purse, her fingers clumsy.

As he started to make his way towards her, she felt a rising panic. She needed to escape. She bumped into the buffet table, sending a plate of canapés flying. She mumbled an apology and retreated, wanting only to disappear.
