The metallic gleam of the empty driveway reflected the streetlights. John stood, rooted to the spot, a feeling spreading through him, like ice. His car was not there.

He ran a hand over his face. The air seemed thin, difficult to breathe. He took a tentative step forward, then another, as if trying to outrun a coming storm.

He saw the neighbor's porch light and tried to focus on something familiar, something safe. It did not help. He felt exposed, at the mercy of something he could not see.
