"But… how?" Emily stammered, her voice thin and reedy. The doctor’s office suddenly became a vortex of doubt and fear. She felt her stomach clench, a cold knot forming in the pit of her being.

She sank back in her chair, a sense of profound shock washing over her. The bright fluorescent lights of the clinic seemed to pulsate, making her head spin. Her breathing became shallow and rapid.

She felt a desperate need to cling to something, anything, for stability. She reached out and grasped the armrest of the chair, her fingers digging into the fabric.
