The hallway leading to the Sales department seemed to stretch into infinity. David felt the cold tile through his thin soles. He’d been in Engineering for years, happily sketching blueprints, lost in his world of lines and measurements. Sales felt like a vast, hostile desert.

He was sweating, despite the air conditioning blasting. He could feel his pulse hammering in his ears, a frantic drumbeat against the silence. The faces he passed were all strangers, their smiles too wide, their eyes too knowing.

He reached the designated office and stopped. His hand hovered over the door handle, his knuckles whitening, but he couldn't bring himself to open it.
