The new environment, the Executive department, loomed before him, promising the worst. Philip felt a chill that had nothing to do with the air conditioning. The move from the finance department felt like a betrayal. His throat closed up.

He kept adjusting his tie, a nervous habit. The faces he passed seemed to scrutinize him. He felt as if he were on display. The thought of the high-pressure meetings, the constant scrutiny, made his stomach churn.

He felt a sudden need to flee, to disappear back to the safety of numbers. He took a deep breath, forcing himself to keep moving. He couldn't stop now.
