The flickering candlelight cast elongated shadows on the walls, making the familiar living room feel alien. Sarah clutched the phone tighter, her knuckles bone-white. The cancellation email, a stark block of text, had landed like a physical blow. The party. Gone. Cancelled. An icy wave swept over her, leaving her trembling. She had spent weeks planning, agonizing over every detail. Now, just a few hours before the guests were due to arrive, it was all erased.

Her breath hitched in her chest. She pictured the empty cake stand, the balloons wilting on the floor, the silent laughter that would never fill the room. A wave of nausea churned in her stomach. She felt as though the floor might give way beneath her.

She mumbled into the phone, "But... why? Is everything okay?" Her voice was barely a whisper, a sound lost in the growing silence.
