"It’s just an old letter," she told herself, but her voice wavered. She'd found it in a volume of Dickens. A shudder, involuntary, passed through her. The world had gone silent.

The letter spoke of a hidden treasure. Not gold or jewels, but something more valuable. Something someone would kill for.

She stared out the window, her pulse hammering in her ears. She felt a growing sensation of isolation, of being exposed. Was she the target?

She jumped at a noise outside. Her hands flew to her mouth, stifling a gasp. She needed to hide. She ran, clutching the letter, into the dark.
