Liam felt his pulse hammer against his temples. He’d received the results early this morning, before the sun had even fully risen. The screen showed a profile, a face he didn’t recognize, a surname that was completely foreign. His hands were ice-cold as he scrolled through the details.

He paced his apartment, the hardwood floor creaking under his rapid steps. The walls seemed to close in, the air growing thick and hard to breathe. He looked out the window. The world outside, the familiar cityscape, seemed distant, unreal. Everything felt as if it was about to tilt.

He tried to rationalize it. It must be a mistake. A glitch in the system. But the way the information swam in front of his eyes… He needed a cigarette. Even though he’d quit two years ago.
