The sun beat down relentlessly on Mark's neck, each ray a fiery reminder of the impending doom. He watched from across the street, his jaw clenched, as the first of the demolition crew hopped out of their trucks. They moved with a casual efficiency that was jarring.

He focused on the cracks in the pavement, trying to find some semblance of order in the chaos. His vision swam, a kaleidoscope of colours blurring the edges of everything. He could feel a cold sweat break out on his skin, despite the heat.

He pulled his collar tighter, wishing he could disappear. Each footstep of the crew, each clang of metal, resonated through him, turning his stomach. He muttered a curse under his breath, then another, his voice strained.
