The phone felt heavy in David’s hand, the plastic cold against his clammy skin. He’d been expecting this call, dreading it for weeks. The silence on the other end felt deafening. His mother’s voice, when she finally spoke, was strained. He squeezed his eyes shut.

“David? Coach called. He… He wants to talk to you tomorrow.”

He felt the blood drain from his face. His carefully constructed world, built on the foundation of the soccer team, was crumbling. The world swam around him as he dropped the phone and fell onto his bed, the covers a tangle of suffocating sheets.
