The confetti cannons sat inert, symbols of the celebration she had hoped for. The hall was too large, the music too loud. She felt exposed, vulnerable. Her friend's party at the exclusive nightclub, the same day, was the talk of everyone in the group.

She kept adjusting her dress, pulling it tighter, feeling it constrict. Her smile felt fixed, unnatural. The few guests who had come whispered amongst themselves. The air felt heavy, suffocating.

She wandered towards the balcony, needing air. The city lights blurred through her tears. The music, a thumping beat of joy, felt like a mocking echo of her loneliness.

She leaned against the railing, the cold metal a small comfort. She was completely alone.
